MS-DOS (Microsoft's Disk Operating System) is an operating system for x86-based personal computers developed mostly by Microsoft. All in all, MS-DOS, its rebranding as IBM PC DOS and some operating systems that try to be compatible with MS-DOS, are sometimes called "DOS" (which is also the generic acronym for the disk operating system). MS-DOS was the main operating system for personal computers compatible with IBM PC during the 80s and early 90s, when it was gradually replaced by operating systems that offer a graphical user interface (GUI), in several generations of the operating system Microsoft Windows graphic.
MS-DOS was the result of the language developed in the seventies that was used by IBM for its mainframe operating system. Microsoft acquired the rights to comply with IBM specifications. IBM obtained its license and relaunched it on August 12, 1981 as PC DOS 1.0 to use on their PCs. Although MS-DOS and PC DOS were initially developed in parallel by Microsoft and IBM, the two products were separated after twelve years, in 1993, with recognizable differences in compatibility, syntax and capabilities.
During its lifetime, several competing products were released for the x86 platform, [5] and MS-DOS went through eight versions, until the development ceased in 2000. [6] Initially, MS-DOS was aimed at processors Intel 8086 that run on computer hardware and use floppy disks to store and access not only the operating system, but also the application software and user data. Progressive version versions offered support for other mass storage media in increasingly larger sizes and formats, along with additional feature support for newer processors and rapidly evolving computer architectures. Ultimately, it was the key product in Microsoft's growth from a programming language company to a diverse software development company, which provided the company with marketing resources and essential revenue. It was also the underlying basic operating system in which early versions of Windows were running as a GUI. It is a flexible operating system and consumes a negligible installation space.
